Designing Animated Tube Maps for Molly’s Underground Roulette
For Molly Thompson’s “London Underground Roulette” series, I created a set of motion graphics designed to make the chaos of randomly riding Tube lines feel clear, fun and easy to follow. The idea of the series is that Molly lets the Underground decide her journey for the day — and my job was to visualise that in a clean, engaging way.
I started by recreating sections of the London Underground map in Adobe Illustrator, building vector assets that could scale smoothly during animation. From there, I used Photoshop to refine certain elements and prep everything for animation. Once the designs were ready, I brought them into After Effects, where the map really comes to life.
Whenever Molly lands on a line, the animation zooms into the exact route she’s taking, highlights the key stations, and traces the journey across the network. It’s a fun mix of accuracy and entertainment, helping viewers instantly understand where she’s heading without slowing down the pace of the video.
This project was a great blend of technical design and playful visuals — and it’s always exciting animating something as iconic as the London Underground. If you’re a creator looking to bring your travel videos, challenges or map-based content to life with custom motion graphics, feel free to reach out. I’d love to help elevate your next project.
